This Vanilla Avocado Green Mint Smoothie Recipe tastes like a healthier twist on a mint chip milkshake

I know. That’s a big claim to make. But it really does satisfy cravings for a mint chip milkshake.

So how can a healthy green smoothie, packed with banana, spinach, and avocado taste like a deliciously sugary, creamy milkshake? Well, there are a few key ingredients that contribute to the taste, texture, or both:

  • Frozen banana – do not use fresh bananas!
  • Ripe avocado
  • Mint and vanilla extracts

Oh, and the mini chocolate chips on top don’t hurt either.

If you’re craving something cool and creamy, give this healthy avocado mint green smoothie recipe a try!

Why you’ll love this healthy recipe

  • Packed with nutritious ingredients.
  • Kid-friendly.
  • Vegan and gluten-free.
  • Healthy enough for breakfast, yet tastes like dessert.

Ingredients Used to Make this Avocado Mint Green Smoothie Recipe

  • Frozen banana: To help your smoothie blend easier, I recommend slicing your bananas before freezing them.
  • Avocado: I recommend using a small, ripe avocado.
  • Spinach: In addition to adding essential nutrients, spinach also provides a lovely green color to give this smoothie that classic mint-green color.
  • Unsweetened oat milk: Oat milk is my milk alternative of choice, but you can also use an unsweetened vanilla almond milk instead.
  • Peppermint extract: Make sure you use peppermint, not mint, extract. I made this mistake once and it made the smoothie taste more like spearmint – not what we’re going for. You can buy peppermint extract online.
  • Vanilla extract: Use just a splash of a good quality vanilla extract.
  • Mini chocolate chips: To keep the recipe vegan, I used Enjoy LIfe’s Mini Chocolate Chips. However, if you aren’t vegan or plant-based, feel free to use any brand of mini chocolate chips.

How to add protein to this avocado mint green smoothie

To make this recipe even more filling, you can also add protein-rich ingredients. Some easy ways to add protein include:

  • Hulled hemp hearts: 10 grams of protein per 3 tablespoons.
  • Vanilla whey or plant-based protein powder: 18-30 grams protein per serving depending on the brand.
  • Cashew butter: 3 grams protein per 1 tablespoon.

Why avocados are great for smoothies

I’ve heard people ask “is avocado good for smoothies?” And my answer is always a resounding yes!

Avocados are such a unique fruit thanks to their high fat content. While the word “fat” often has a bad connotation, certain types of dietary fats, like the ones found in avocados, are actually incredibly beneficial for you.

In fact, a diet high in healthy, unsaturated fats can have benefits for your weight and heart health.

Plus, avocados are also rich in essential nutrients like potassium, folate, vitamin K, vitamin C, vitamin E, and vitamins B5 and B6.

Do avocados burn belly fat?

Another common question is “do avocados burn belly fat?” The short answer is no. However, eating avocados has been linked with having a lower BMI and a reduced risk of metabolic syndrome.

So, what does this mean? Unfortunately, avocados don’t have any magical fat-burning properties. But they are a rich source of healthy fats and fiber, both of which can help keep you full for longer, reducing the likelihood that you’ll end up munching later in the day.

And as a result, you may find that adding avocados can help you maintain your current weight or even lose weight.

Tips for making the best creamy green smoothie

Here are some of my key tips for making a perfectly creamy, healthy avocado green smoothie:

  • Use a high-powered blender. I’m a big believer in getting a good quality blender, especially if you plan on using it often. I use a Ninja, but Vitaminx and KitchenAid both have great options as well.
  • Place the milk and spinach closest to the blade. In order to get your spinach fully broken down, make sure you place it and the milk at the bottom of your blender so that it’s right near the blade. The other heavier ingredients will help push it down to fully incorporate it — trust me, you don’t want pieces of spinach in your smoothie!
  • Use sliced frozen bananas. As mentioned above, the key to a really creamy smoothie is using a frozen banana that was sliced before freezing. This will prevent any big chunks of frozen banana ending up in your drink and make the whole beverage nice and creamy.
