Fruit-based desserts just scream summer, and I would bet that more than half of you reading this are planning on serving dessert over the 4th of July that includes fruit. While peach crisps, berry trifles, and strawberry pies are all 4th of July classics, after filling up on burgers, pasta salad, and grilled veggies I find myself wanting the flavors of a fruit pie without feeling overly stuffed. Enter in these nectarine turnovers. Thanks to wonton skins in place of pastry, you can enjoy a fruity dessert for only 35 calories. Plus they don’t require a bowl or utensils to eat, making them ideal picnic, boating, or party food!
If you’re wondering why I went with nectarines rather than peaches it’s quite simple: I wanted to be lazy and not worry about peeling them. That’s it. No nutrition-related reason. If all you have are peaches at home, feel free to sub them in for the nectarines, just make sure to peel them before adding to the filling mixture.
Please don’t let the low calorie, low sugar status scare you away! The inside of these turnovers is gooey and just the right amount of sweet without being tooth-achingly sugary. Plus the extra cinnamon –sugar topping ups the sweetness even more. Even Bry who grew up in a town known for their fruit pies and crisps was raving about these turnovers!
While alone these make for a lighter fruit pie-tasting dessert, if you wanted to get indulgent I wouldn’t judge if you put one or two in a bowl with French vanilla ice cream. In fact I’d be incredibly jealous 😉
So here’s a toast to upcoming warm summer nights made better with warm fruity bites!

O my goodness! Love this idea!! How fun are these little pockets of sweetness!?
Thanks Rebecca! They’re almost too fun to eat…I don’t think they lasted more than an hour 😉
